We see a lot of guitar parts leave the shop every year. Most of the time, we never hear how the parts turned out or what our customers did with their orders. Some customers will come back to the site and post pictures in our Gallery. Every now and then a particular build will totally stand out from the rest. We recently received a note from Dustin Wallace of the band With the Punches. His build was featured in Premier Guitar as their September 2011 Guitar of the Month. (Way to go Dustin!)
From a construction perspective, Dustin’s build was fairly straight forward. The guitar is a left handed Les Paul style guitar made out of maple with a single bridge pickup and black binding. The neck is also maple with black traps and binding. It’s how he paid for the project and what it means to the band’s fans that sets this build apart. Dustin heard about people selling advertising space on laptop covers which prompted him to see if he could do something similar on his guitar. So Dustin reached out to friends, family and fans of the band and sold 100 names on his guitar top. The body was sent to a laser engraver who engraved the names on the body top. The end result is far more than a marketing opportunity and is a great way to connect with the band’s fans.
It is great to see how Dustin took a fairly simple DIY project and turned it in to something unique. Dustin used the guitar when With the Punches toured Japan this past summer. The band also recently signed with Doghouse Records and Dustin will be taking his guitar into the studio for their first full length CD next month.
Congrats to Dustin and With the Punches! Be sure to check out our customer Gallery to see other great customer builds. Question: What do the Grateful Dead, Foo Fighters, Meatloaf and Buddy Guy all have in common?
Answer: They all have band members using Warmoth parts. One of the more common questions we see on the internet is how good are Warmoth parts. Here's your answer. Upgrading your axe or building a custom instrument is a very visual process. We've talked about that in previous blog posts. It is extremely helpful to be able to see the neck or body exactly as it will arrive. The Showcase is Warmoth's in stock selection of bodies and necks. Typically there are over 1,500 necks and over 1,000 bodies. Each body and neck is individually photographed with front and back photos.
Customers often wonder how stock ends up in the Showcase and how often it is updated. The Showcase is usually updated daily. The most popular product categories receive the most new stock. The images below are of the necks headed to the Showcase today. The vast majority of the Showcase stock is first run merchandise that was made specifically for the Showcase. We regularly stock our most popular items. Bodies and necks made with exceptional woods are also added to the Showcase if a piece of wood inspires us. We are always experimenting with new options and finishes, so you will see a handful of one-offs in the Showcase as well. Lastly, there will be a few order cancelations or factory seconds. Those are rare, but they can be found.
Ordering from the Showcase is faster than starting from scratch as most, if not all, of the build work is already done. This is great for customers that are under time constraints or want it NOW! It is also great for customers looking for very specific wood figuring or a specific weight. Lastly, Showcase items are often discounted as we make them in bulk and pass the production savings on to you. Do you see what you want or do you want what you see? Get it now!

Have you ever changed clothes after you realized what you were wearing didn't match? Have you ever re-arranged your furniture (or been told to re-arrange the furniture) because you didn't like the layout? Have you ever swapped out a pickguard or hardware more than once because you didn't like the color? Each of these scenarios are similar in that it can be difficult to visualize the end result.
Warmoth cannot help you with the first two, but we can help with your guitar. Our upgraded Strat and Tele Body Builders now include the options to select the pickguard and hardware for your body. You can mix and match and see how the options work with each other in real time. Change your pickguard color. Try different types and colors of knobs. Select your pickups and see the end result. Make it ugly. Make it pretty. Make it the way you want it.

This week we welcome Chris Shiflett of the Foo Fighters and Vicky Beeching to our Warmoth Stars Section.
Chris has been playing a custom made Tele® Deluxe with the Foo Fighters. Chris joined the Foo Fighters after their third album, There is Nothing Left to Lose. Chris has also work in bands such as Me First and the Gimme Gimmes and Viva Death. His Tele® Deluxe is swamp ash with a Mary Kay white finish, maple CBS style neck and silver pearl pickguard.
Vicky's has been playing a custom made '72 Thinline® on tour. Vicky is part theologian and part songwriter/musician. She has a degree from Oxford and signed her first publishing contract at age 17. Vicky's '72 Thinline is extra light swamp ash with a Trans black burst finish, maple Tele style neck with black star inlay and vintage pearl pickguard.
Chris came to Warmoth unannounced and only after he'd ordered parts for multiple guitars did we know who he was! Vicky came to Warmoth looking for an ultra light guitar to help her deal with ongoing health issues. Both stars came to Warmoth for different reasons and found exactly what they wanted. Check out Warmoth's growing list of stars here. You'll find musicians from a wide range of musical styles and tastes.

This week's blog update is a somber occasion. Today we recognize a fallen musical brother and former Warmoth employee.
Brian Eckels worked for Warmoth in the sales department for several years and had been in bands with other staff members. Brian was a professional musician for over 25 years and had also spent time in the art world and as a commercial pilot.
Brian passed away last month and is survived by his mother, sister, fiancee, children and grand children. Brian will be missed.

There has never been a time when we've had more information and data at our fingertips than now. With the incredible growth of the internet, anyone can start a blog, a website or their own forum. Unfortunately, this also means there is a tremendous amount of bogus or erroneous information. You get the good with the bad and it can be difficult to distinguish between the two.
UnofficialWarmoth was started as a site for Warmoth enthusiasts back in 2007. It was started by a few Warmoth employees, but is not an official communications channel for Warmoth. Anyone is welcome to join, even if you don't own Warmoth parts or have ever built an instrument. In fact, it is a great source for general DIY guitar information with over 6,000 members and dozens of active sub-forums. There are sections for DIY finishing, wiring & electronics, pickups, woods, and so on! Do you have a burning question or time-tested experience? Why not check out UnofficialWarmoth? You might learn something new, help out a beginner or both!
One of the highlights of the site is the 'Guitar of the Month' contest. (There are also occasional 'Bass of the Month' contests strictly for bassists!) There are no awards other than bragging rights and having your axe displayed on the main page of the site for a month but it is a great chance for forum members to show off their own builds. Warmoth offers a wide range of bodies and necks. Here are a few of this month's entrants. Be sure to check out the Gallery section of the website for past winners and forum member builds.
