Edin Ajanovic
Gecko wide 5, wenge body, wenge/bubinga laminated neck, ebony fretboard, tung-oil finish, golden hardware, Seymour Duncan BassLines Phase II passive soapbars, Aguilar OBP-3 onboard preamp, active/passive switch, 400/800 Hz mid-EQ parametric switch.
Weight 5.920 kg.
Sound is amazing, very sharp defined with lots, lots and lots of middle, well defined strong bottom, lot of harmonics but soft high, and infinity sustain. Aguilar OBP-3 works very well. In centered EQ pots position no difference between active and passive mode.
Very satisfied!
All Thanks to Warmoth!!! BILL RIDNER
5 STRING FRETLESS GECKO BASS. WALNUT BODY WITH TRANSPARENT RED, QUILTED MAPLE TOP. EMG PUs WITH QBS SYSTEM. SCHALLER HARDWARE. James Smith
This is My Gecko Chessboard IV bass.It has a rear maple/wenge chessboard top, swamp ash body. The neck is wenge with an ebony fingerboard. I purchased it right off the showcase. The pu's are EMG j40's with an awesome Mike Pope preamp. The control are:Stacked volume/tone, bass, treble, midrange with a preamp bypass switch. The body is Purpleheart, with a Wenge/Purpleheart neck and lined fretless Pau Ferro fingerboard. I elected to omit the gecko inlay and got a Purpleheart peghead veneer to match the body. I put in a Bartolini MM pickup in the bridge, and a Bartolini Jazz pickup in the neck. The Bartolini active electronics have a 3 band EQ.
I even set a replica of the USA Military Purpleheart Medal in the headstock. Greg Bogoshian
This is my first bass design/build for a customer in the Seattle, WA area. It is a 35 scale Gecko using Hipshot hardware and Bartolini MM5 series pickup wired for series/parallel/bridge. It is chambered Cuban mahogany with purpleheart top and rear cover and the Warmoth Gecko neck is a bubinga/purpleheart laminate with ebony fingerboard and SS frets. My site for other guitars is www.rockbeachguitars.com . Richard Hall
Gecko six string fretted. The body is Alder with a Maple top finished in Dragonburst. The pickups are EMG with a Ken Smith BT circuit. The neck and fingerboard are Wenge with stainless steel frets. This bass has a compressed, dry sound with really strong low mids you'd think it was a neck-through instead of a bolt on! I'm actually considering tweaking the electronics in order to brighten the sound a bit. Its also a bit heavy, but that might be a factor in its huge sound. And I've yet to find a dead or hot spot on the neck. It seems like the more I play it the better it sounds. Go Warmoth! Richard Hall
Gecko six string fretless with no lines. Swamp Ash body with a Tangerine finish, EMG pickup. Maple neck with an Ebony fingerboard. Plays and sounds great, and I'm quite pleased with the results. johnny ramos
walnut 5 string seymour duncan preamp aguilar 18 volts is fine, good sound, pretty woods and....is amazing bass to player bass Terry Palmer
This Bass has a wide neck ONLY go for it if you really, really, really want a WIDE neck!!!!!
Maple neck/maple board. Nordstrand DC pickups with Aguilar OBP3 preamp. This bass covers all bases. I am very happy with the results. A High end bass at a great price plus the satisfaction of building it myself. I'll definitely do it again! Kyler Welsch
This is my second project but first Warmoth which turned out far better than I had hoped both in looks and sound.

Specs:

The body is black Korina with a figured Walnut top and a maple accent between the two. The neck is Brazilian Rosewood with Wenge laminates and an Ebony fingerboard with a matching Ebony cap on the end of the neck. The body has a Danish oil finish which is waxed periodically, and the neck was given fingerboard oil. The pickups are Seymour Duncan Basslines ASB26's with a matching Basslines 3-band tone circuit. The hardware is all the standard that comes with the Gecko, Gotoh tuners, Kahler bridge, etc.

The low end is very clear with no boom to it, the mid goes from present but not overpowering to TONS of growl, and the high end is very clear and articulated without having any unwanted hiss or clicks of the strings. My favorite company used to be Warwick, this bad boy blows all the Warwicks I've owned out of the water! Because this one turned out so well I'm looking at my next fretless being another Gecko. John Vincent
This is my first Gecko project, and it is a beauty. Meduim Honey Burst Quilted maple over alder body, Birds eye maple neck with a honey burst peghead. It is fitted with 2 Bartolini M4 Humbuckers and a Bartolini 4.6 18 volt preamp, Kahler bridge, this thing hits hard. I am currently working on another Gecko jazz setup, Warmoth is the way to go. Gyorgy Nedoluha
The facts:
Gecko small swamp ash body with Hipshot A style bridge and EMG40TW pickups wired to 18V. The neck is wenge/bubinga with ebony fretboard, jet black ebony peghead veneer, Gotoh machine heads and Warwick Justanut II. The body has coloured oil finish, the neck is raw. The controls are vol/vol/p.tone, each volume is push/pull for coilsplitting. Strung with DR HIBeam 45130.
The sound:
I always liked Warwick basses, the feel and sound of exotic woods. Due to the similar woods the Gecko has thoose punchy mids but it's more balanced and controlable. The 35 scale really helps the low B string. One of the best sounding basses I've ever played.
Thanks to Spike @ Warmoth!
Nedo Sean Smith
Here are some photos of my Gecko project. With the figured Koa top and Walnut back it looks and sounds excellent! This is the first time I have built an instrument using your parts and the fit and finish were excellent. I went with a 100% Tung oil finish (I know it's not the Warmoth preferred finish). I prefer this feel to a spray on finish, man it takes FOREVER for the oil to cure, but it's worth it. Some Howard Citrus-Shield brought it to this nice polished shine. You'll notice the electronics cover is wood as well. I'll be making a truss rod cover soon. Should look good! Hope you all like it as much as I do. As I can see you don't have any Geckos posted on the web site so...

Joe Meyer
This is the 6th Warmoth bass that I've put together but the first Gecko. The cosmetics of the Gecko just blew me away! For several years I've been waiting on Warmoth to offer a 35" scale bass and for them to offer one with such a slick looking body was certainly an added plus. The neck of my Gecko is Wenge/bubinga with an ebony finger board and the body is a figured walnut top with a walnut core. I finished the body with 12 coats of low luster Polymerized tung oil, rubbing it down with steel wool between coats. The result was a nice deep satin finish that really shows off the figured walnut top. I applied just 3 coats of Polymerized tung oil on the neck since wenge doesn't really require a finish. I installed Bartolini soap bar pickups and a Demeter 3-band preamp. The electronics of the bass are extremely quite (I also applied 2 coats of shielding paint in the control cavity and pick-up routing holes). The bridge that I used was an ABM and the tuners are Gotoh. I was going for a nice warm sound and the bass definitely produces that! Overall I'm very pleased with the bass. It actually turned out even better than I hoped. As a side note, If you're looking for a soft case for a Gecko, it fits in the Gator GL Lite case very well. A great alternative to the heavy expensive hard cases and offers much more protection than a gig bag.
Greg Cloon
I have the bass just about complete, and here's the pics I promised waaaaay back when I ordered the wood. (Hipshot took for-e-v-e-r) I'm looking for better speed knobs but I've spent two days playing it now and the tone is more than I'd hoped for. I'm not sure if it's the electronics, the wood, the scale, or a combination of all three, but the tone makes me want to keep playing it... and playing it.

The last one is probably my favorite.

Body:
Burl maple lamenate over a solid chunk of mahoganny. Finished with a lot of steel wool and tung oil. Many applied rubbings of Howards Feed 'n wax followed. No wood stains were used.

Neck:
Wenge Fretboard with a Maple and Pao Ferro Lamanete. 35" scale. Back of the neck is finished with tons 'o Tung oil & Howards (like body) fretboard only has Howards applied to it.

Electonics:
EMG 40P in the neck position and an EMG 40TW at the bridge. There is a blend between the two pickups. The 40TW is switchable between dual and single coil. It has an EMG 3 band EQ with switchable high's and contoured mid. I wired the bass for 18v.

Misc:
The bridge is a Hipshot model A. Gotoh tuners, a Bone nut. The pickup routes, the entire electronics cavity, and the back of the cover are all covered with shielding tape. The only item that might be sub paar, is the wiring... because I left full lengths of everything. I've always hated going back to work on something and not having enough wire to make working on it easy. So I left myself a small rats nest. Not to mention there wasn't a lot of room left in the compartment after the circuit boards and both batteries.

So far, I've gotten a ton of comopliments on it. Just wish the neck was shallower.

Thanks for all the help.

Eric Bach
The wide, smooth and warm wengue neck and fingerboard is so good to me. (i've got the feel, warm and deep of warwick, but with the PB neck i like).

I've varnish the swamp ash body with a special "mahogany" tinted transparent wood vernish.

PickUps and passiv wiring as i'm used to play my jazz-fusion. (yes, combine a MM bartolini with all wengue neck/fingerBoard, and you'll got something else than the cold MEC active!).

Eric C. Legroux
Yes it's finish, my first 5 String BASS!!! named : DEFENDER

It's sound is absolutly great! No! more than: simply unbelievable...

Ok ! The design is a matter of Taste, but the most important is the Sound.

Remember ist a passive 5-String Bass and believe me, much better than 99,99% of active Basses on the Market. Many many Thanks to Warmoth for the excellent wood quality!!! => www.warmoth.com

Many many Thanks to Q-Tuner for the fantastic Pick-ups!!! => www.Q-tuner.com Here the facts:

Deep and heavy fretless good sound.

Jon McMillan
Here is my latest Gecko project. It took a few years of saving money and hard work, but it's finally done and couldn't be better!

Here are the specs:

Walnut Gecko body with custom heel contour, carved myself with a few hand tools Fretless maple medium 5 neck with ebony fingerboard, no inlay, no lines Clear Nitro-lacquer finish on body and neck Black Hipshot style B bridge/Gotoh tuners Seymour Duncan Passive Soapbars (one of the first sets sold!) Passive V/T/select-switch with inset Neutrik locking jack The tone of this bass is MASSIVE. It's well rounded and deep, but it has a really nice bite that cuts through when I ask it to. It's meaty and thick, but not boomy or muffled at all. My SWR head and Eden cabinet compliment it better than I ever dreamed. It sings and growls, but it also holds down the bottom end like no bass I've build before.

This is my third Warmoth bass, and certainly not the last. Numbers 4 and 5 are in the works and awaiting approval from the budget police.

Thanks for the great products. I couldn't be happier with my basses. When set up right, they are every bit as good as any high end bass I've ever played, in playability, tone, and features.

Anthony Apglaser
I finally got around to taking some pics of the quilted maple Gecko fretless 6 string that I finished earlier in the year. Everyone that has heard it and seen it has remarked what a great sound it has, and how cool it looks.

It's one of the best feeling and most comfortable basses I have ever played. After I got the body and the neck I applied 7 coats of tung oil to both, then assembled it. After the neck and body were together I applied two coats of bees wax to get a good shine.

The electronics and final setup was done by William Fells, and Douglas Montgomery of the Guitar Factory in Orlando. Bill and Doug are great guys and great luthiers as well. All the electronics are passive using Bartolini xxm56 pickups. The quilted maple looks very deep and the fretless ebony fingerboard really growls.

I'm looking forward with to getting the second Gecko going.

Daniele Crova
Hi all, I'm Daniele and I'm proud to show you my hard work:

Gecko 1:

Neck: Medium 5 in wenge/bubinga with wenge fretboard, SS6115 frets and gotoh gb7 tuning machines. Body: Swamp Ash with Quilted Maple top, Tiger-eye dye finish with black back, kahler bridge, shaller security straplocks. Pickups: EMG40DC active soapbars for neck & bridge. Electronic: Aguilar OBP3 18V (double battery box self routed). Controls: Vol, Blend, Treble, Mid, Bass, mid switch (400-800Hz), metal knobs.

Gecko 2:

Nech: Wide 5 in maple/purpleheart with pao-ferro fretboard, SS6115 frets, Hipshot Ultralight tuning machines, clear satin finish. Body: Mahogany with Rosewood top, clear gloss finish, kahler bridge, shaller security straplocks. Pickups: Bartolini passive soapbars (P25CBC classic bass series) P2 shape for neck & bridge. Electronic: Aguilar OBP3 18V (double battery box self routed). Controls: Vol (push-pull for active-passive mode), Blend, Treble, Mid (push-pull for 400-800Hz mode), Bass, switches for series-parallel coil configuration for each pickup, metal knobs.

All parts fits perfectly (with minor adjustment) and the sound is incredible, amazing, punchy, with a lot of bass & treble for the 1 and a lot of middle-low and treble for the 2 ... the feeling playing these necks is shocking, expecially for the wenge, it has no finish.. they are sooooooo fast and easy to play ....now I have doubts on which one I have to use!!!!

Thanks to warmoth staff (Bill Cook, Jay Davidson and the entire crew) and Brian of Bestbassgear (www.bestbassgear.com) for the help, patience and taste!!! .... thank you guys!!!

Dan Callaway
Hi,

I just finished building a Gecko bass (my first home-built instrument) and I thought you might want to add it to your gallery... This is a fretless (w/fretlines) "Medium" ebony neck, alder body, and walnut top. I used Alembic pickups and a Bartolini 3-band preamp. This is really a great bass! I string it with Thomastik flat wounds. This bass provides great, upright-like tone, in a surprisingly lightweight package. I would expect a bass this nice to cost well over $2000, but I invested only $1200 in this project.

Thanks for making such a nice kit!

Roger Kimball
I enjoyed looking around the bass gallery.

It's good to see the company staying on top with designs like the Gecko. Seeing it for the first time, I'm tempted...

This bass was built using my second Warmoth 5-string neck, purchased about 10 years ago. I started making my own bass bodies some years ago for two reasons:

The first was the ever-growing price of "good" basses; Secondly, my musician/chiropractor friend told me that I could have less back trouble if my basses were balanced and not neck-heavy. I extended the strap horn to the 12th fret and found that he was absolutely right!

Although it is heavy, I can wear it for a two-hour set quite easily. When I let go of the neck, it just stays put. The body is an original design, 10-piece mahogany body with bookmatched birdseye maple top. The story behind the mahogany is that I was building some furniture, and when I put the mahogany through the tablesaw, it began to resonate deeply. I was so impressed, I saved all the scraps, of different densities, and glued them up in two layers of 5 pieces each, topping it with the birdseye maple. I think the different densities of the wood help keep out any dead spots in the sound. The finish is urathane. I don't like the sound of the wood when oil finishes are absorbed. I think they have a muting effect. Much against Warmoth advice, I never put a finish on the neck. It has been incredibly stable all these years in this funky New England weather, so I guess I can stop holding my breath. The bridge is a Schaller for which I had different brass saddles made. The pickups are EMG DCs with the active bass/treble control they make. When any of my students want to customize their bass, I always recommend Warmoth. One of them is converting to fretless thanks to Warmoth right now.

Svend Drewsen
This my first Gecko base.

Figured walnut on walnut body, maple/bubinga neck with figured walnut peghead veneer. Bartolini 5 string J/P pickup settup and a Bartolini NTMB 4.6 a/p preamp. The bridge is a Leo Quan Badas IV. I sanded the body wtih special Micro Mesh sanding paper up to grit 4000, oil'ed it with some Antique oil and than wax'ed it with bieswax. Finnishing this way, the surfase feels smooth like a new-polished satin laquer finnish every day, but unlike laquer, you can feel the warmth of the wood. I purcased the neck with satin finnish, to match the gloss of the body.

This is the greatest 5 string I have ever played. I have sold all my other basses, and will newer by other than Warmoth in the future. Here you can choose exactly, the feel, sound and look of your instrument, and the people here knows what you need to know.

And the quality? Woww!

Joe Meyer
This is my 2nd Gecko project. I put together my first Gecko (fretted) in May of 2004 and was so pleased with the final product that I decided to put together a fretless Gecko also. I was very happy with the sound of my former Roscoe fretless and thought that I'd use it as the template to spec out the Gecko fretless. I went with a quilted maple top/alder body, maple/bubinga/ebony neck, Bartolini soap bar pickups, Bartolini 4.6 3-band preamp, ABM bridge and Gotoh tuners (all hardware black). I was really going for a fretless with a great deal of mwah and based on past experiences felt that one of the key ingredients was the use of Bart soap bar pickups and the Bart 3-band preamp. The mid control of the Bart 3-band is IMO 2nd to none. I applied a Polymerized tung oil finish on the body and neck. The finish really made the quilt on the body and neck head stock jump out. Overall, I'm very pleased with the finished product. The bass certainly achieved my primary goal, a fretless with lots of mwah, and overall surpassed my expectations in overall appearance and playability.

Tino Tedesco
Ciao Warmoth Team, this is my latest Gecko 6 sporting a Wenge/Ebony neck and a Mahogany/5A Quilted Maple body, Bartolini 3-band EQ, Bassline Soapbars, Gotoh Hardware...and a huge amount of power, punch and versatility. Extremely balanced sound from Low B to High C and a killer look! A big Thank U to Brian for his assistance and great taste!

Tino Tedesco
This wide Gecko 5 has long been my primary 5 String, especially in the recording studios; the wenge/wenge neck is totally stable and the combination of active Seymour Duncan Soapbars and the Aguilar 3-Band EQ make it extremely versatile and dead quiet!! The tiger eye dye finish looks killer and the Hipshot lightweight hardware helps, especially on long sessions! Oh, and live, played over a Tech-Soundsystem 6 x 10" XLT cabinet (2100W !!!!!!!!!!!) and a Crown Proweramp (bridged to 2400W), it literally MOVES MOUNTAINS

Tino Tedesco
I really think this one doesn't need any comments, it sounds as good as it looks! Fretless from outer space...

Nov 2003 Tino Tedesco
The ROCK machine par excellence; you simply can't go wrong with a wenge neck. This Bass is in heavy usage in the hands of FlipperG, bassplayer for DISGROOVE, an emergent power rock grunge band from Switzerland. Check it out: www.Disgroove.com

Tino Tedesco
One of the most aggressive and tight sounding 5 string basses I've ever had in my workshop; a great Slap bass! Obviously the large string spacing at the bridge AND at the nut really helps...

Jon Packard
This is my Gecko 5 string project, easily the nicest one I've seen. The body was from the Showcase - solid lacewood that included the paint job, and I had the neck made. I ordered a maple/maple neck and much to my surprise, it came with a birdseye maple fingerboard! I've included a close up of the board so you can see the beautiful figuring of the wood. Everything went together beautifully, and the bass sounds, plays and feels great. It's also a real head-turner, I get asked about where I got such a beautiful instrument all the time! Thanks for everything!
Jon McMillan
My two favorite basses happen to be the two Warmoth basses I've built over the last couple of years. The yellow Jazz was my first. It's an Ash body with Amber dye and clear nitro. The finish is very thin and has a lot of dings and marks, but it sounds like an old Jazz bass should. The neck is maple/maple, the pickups are SD Antiquity Jazz II's, the bridge is a Gotoh (strung through the body) and the tuners are Schallers. I also put a home-brew gain only preamp in it to buffer long signal runs and clean up the detail in the sound. For totally old-school Jazz bass, I can switch the preamp off at any time without a pop. The Gecko 5 string was my second Warmoth bass to build. It sports a quilt maple top on an alder body, with a maple/maple neck. The neck has a light birdseye to it that looks really great! The body was oiled first, then finished to a high gloss with clear Nitro out of a Pre-val sprayer. Not perfect, but it still looks great! The pickups are Bartolini P2's, the bridge is a Hipshot, and the tuners are Gotoh, all from Warmoth. It has the same preamp that the Jazz does. I really enjoy building these basses, and I'm working on a Walnut Fretless Gecko 5. So far I've cut a deeper cutaway, reshaped the upper horn, and reshaped the heel to allow easy access to the end of the fretboard. I have plans for many more Warmoth basses in my future. The quality is absolutely excellent, and it's a joy to play something of my own creation!

Peet Golan
The Gecko has to has to have the coolest fretboard inlay on the planet. This is my Gecko 5 string bass. I had a guy named Peter Stokes from Broken Neck Guitar Repair put this together for me. He put the finish on it, did the routing for the pickup, the electronics, recessed the bridge and set it up. It has a Bartolini Musicman style pickup in it. The Body is made of walnut. It has a Maple neck and a Pau-Ferro fingerboard. I have to say, its pretty awesome. I wish they made this in a four string. How cool would that be. I'd make another, we'll that is after I finish the Warmoth Les Paul style bass that just arrived in the mail today. Rock on!
David Huber
Dear Warmoth ,

I send you some photos of my brandnew Sixstring. It has a custom body build by myself an one of your Gecko 6 string necks. First of all I really want to thank you for building such great parts. The neck is wonderful easy to play and fits perfect to the my body design.

The describtion of the bass:

This is my second custom bass project, but the first with warmoth parts, the neck is a maple / purple heart neck with a pao ferro fingerboard. The body is build by myself of bubinga pommele and a nice bookmatched sappeli mahogany top. The whole bass has a oil wax finish, witch gives it a satin stain, and a excellent feeling (especially the necks feels great). A used an ABM bridge, LeFay Rough Crystal pickups and a Noll aktive 3 band equalizer.
