I needed a smaller bass with a shorter scale, so I sold my big old 34" bass and built this 30" short scale Jazz bass®.
I wanted something with a vintagey vibe, and I found a lovely swamp ash Daphne Blue body in the showcase and ordered a tortoise pickguard and bubinga/pau ferro neck with abalone inlay and stainless steel frets to go with it, plus Roadhouse stacked humbucking pickups and Fender lightweight vintage style tuners. I had the bridge cover engraved by Doug's Custom Neck Plates. The results look great and it plays very well.
It fits my hands much better than my old bass, and I don't have to stretch my arm and turn my wrist at an awkward angle when I'm playing the lower notes. I was concerned that the tension might feel too loose, but it really doesn't feel much different than a regular bass, and with round wound strings it has plenty of punch when I need it.
